California congresswoman Barbara Lee has officially announced her bid for Democratic caucus chairman. Rep. Barbara Lee is one of the more progressive voices of the Democratic Party, so her run alone demonstrates the increasing calls to elect progressive Democrats to their leadership roles throughout the party.

Lee references to her identity as a black woman as a 'backbone' of the Democratic Party,

When you look at the history of the Democratic Party and the Democratic leadership, African-American women ... we’ve been the backbone of the Democratic Party — we should be in the face of leadership also,’
— Rep. Barbara Lee to Politico

Lee has said her goal is "returning bold Democratic leadership to Congress." Lee has been a representative since 1998. If her bid to become Democratic caucus chairman is successful, she would be the first black women in either political party to hold such a leadership position.

House Minority leader Nancy Pelosi announced just a week ago that leadership elections should be postponed to after Thanksgiving, to give every one  fair chance.
